What is the Signal Quality Index?

The Signal Quality Index is an algorithm that performs signal quality checks on the data.

Once the participant data is separated into samples by Key Moment, it is passed through the Signal Quality algorithm to determine the cleanliness of the data. This is a fundamental signal processing step for the detection and removal of signal artefacts - occurences in the data that are not directly related to the physiological measurement but to something external, like movement or signal noise. If the sample is flagged as having too many reconstructed artefacts, it is considered unreliable and therefore is not included in the analysis.

The Affect-tag web application allows you to control the level of severity of the algorithm depending on your research needs, from adequate to rigorous. The final number of samples to be used for analysis will be shown in the Data Acqusition Quality section of the Debreifing page.

To improve signal quality,
  1. ensure the band is properly placed on the wrist of the participant, tight but comfortable
  2. minimize movement of the arm
  3. avoid unneccessary pressure on the band once data acqusition has begun
  4. apply the band to moisturized skin
  5. gently wipe the electrodes on the inside of the band with a dry, microfiber cloth
